Mark Adams

Mark Adams was born in Templeton, California, and raised on the same ranch where he now makes Ledge wine. The land, now called Adams Ranch Vineyards, has been in the family since the 1970s.

During college, Adams would take back to school cases of hand-bottled shiners: the first James Berry Vineyard Rhone blends, giving him a glimpse of what was to come and inspiring future wines at Ledge.

Adams studied music and cinema, eventually landing a job in sound effects editing at Sony Pictures. But in 2003, Adams moved back to Paso with the idea of planting fruit trees on the family ranch. Adams went to work for his childhood friend Justin Smith at Saxum winery as the assistant winemaker, and Smith encouraged Adams to plant vines instead of fruit.

In spring 2005, Adams planted the first block of what would become the Ledge Estate: a flat, 40-acre property in the Willow Creek District, composed of sandy loam, rolled sandstones and clay. He collected thousands of Estrella Syrah cuttings from the Bone Rock terraces at James Berry Vineyard and with the help of several college friends, planted 4 acres.

He and his wife Ciera now live with their daughter at Adams Ranch Vineyards in the home he grew up in.
