Vailia From

Vailia From established her wanderlust spirit in Snowflake, Arizona – a dusty desert town of 4,000. She headed to San Diego and then to Scottsdale after high school, where, while waiting tables, she met a sommelier who taught her all about wine.

Within a year, she was working for a broker of fine German wines, first in sales and then in a management position. By 23, she was on track to earning a Master of Wine title. But then she walked away. She traveled to Central America for inspiration, then Waterloo, Ontario. Vailia eventually resumed WSET classes and began working with an importer who was bringing in wine from California. Again throwing herself into the wine business, From joined in importing and white-labeling wine from Paso Robles. During a buying trip, she decided that she would one day make wine herself.

In 2007, From set up camp in a trailer in one of the vineyards where she began to learn everything there was to know about making wine. For two years, she produced alongside the other young gunslingers of Paso Robles.

Desparada Wines was born in 2009, when From felt she had mastered enough skills to start her own label. She made four barrels. Four years later, she was setting up shop in Tin City, making 3,500 cases annually and earning respect from both critics and her wine club.

Working virtually every job in the wine industry, from service to sales to importing, From feels she has found her home. Her goal each year is to capture the soul of the grapes and the unique conditions of the vintage.
